Mackenzie Hanus is kicking off her second year as Vice President of Fox River Ad Club. Let’s catch up with our “second in command” to learn more about her and what Ad Club has in store for this season.
How did you get your start with Fox River Ad Club?
Past President, Amy Soquet, introduced me to ad club 3 years ago; I was the sponsorship chair that year and sat on the education committee. It also happened to work out that KHROME, the agency I work for, sponsored the ADDYs that year, so I was heavily involved in that process as well. After that first year of being so involved, as Alison Suski stepped up to be President, I took her place as VP my second year on the board. I suppose it was a pretty quick transition into this role, but I really loved everything Ad Club did (and continues to do), so I dove in head first!
Vice President is a pretty important title. What will you be working on this year?
The biggest project I will tackle as VP is the American Advertising Awards (ADDYs). We’ve really seen an increase in interest and engagement in the previous few years of ADDY award shows, so I am thrilled to have a great sponsor this year (shout-out to Candeo) that is committed to ensuring that the event is a true experience! There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into the event (submissions, judging weekend, set-up, forwarding winning work to districts, etc.) and we really work hard on it all year long. I have a great board and ADDY committee behind me helping every step of the way!
As VP, I also have to frequently check our PO Box…a very important task. 🙂 Other than that, I work with our board chairs to assist with anything they need to be successful throughout the year. Oh, and if Alison wins the lottery and moves to a remote island, I guess I would become the President by default. Hah!
What are you most looking forward to for this year?
We have so many great events this year that are applicable to anyone in the industry, and with speakers from all over the country! There’s great momentum in the Fox Valley right now in the creative and entrepreneurial community; I am excited to have Ad Club be part of the movement! We’re trying new things this year, like our brunch presentation we held at the end of November and an evening networking and speaker event in March. And of course, our annual Holiday Kegger with Jackson & Co. on December 8th and the ADDYs in February.
This year’s Ad Club Kickoff theme was “Let’s Get Weird.” What’s one weird or unexpected thing that people would be surprised to know about you?
Well, it took me 5 times to pass my driver’s test! Not sure if that’s weird or just scary – probably a little bit of both! Something unexpected…I love karaoke, but I am awful at it. I’ve been known to impersonate Britney Spears (choreographed dance moves and all) at Mikey’s Pub, with some Ad Club friends as witnesses.
Want to catch up with Mackenzie and other Ad Clubbers in person? Join us for some holiday cheer at Jackson & Co. studios on Dec. 8th! Also, mark Feb. 16th down on your calendars for our annual ADDYs award show. It’s Ad Club’s biggest event – you won’t want to miss it!
And speaking of the ADDYs, we are now accepting submissions! Find all the details here.
